Vernal Pool Hike

  Every spring, small depressions in the northern forest floor come alive, filling with rain, melting snow, and, eventually, salamander and frog eggs. By summer’s end, many of these vernal pools will have dried out, revealing little trace of the life they contained in April & May. Join us for a moderately-strenuous, 1.2-mile roundtrip hike to a hilltop vernal pool at the Horatio Colony Nature Preserve, where we’ll explore the exquisite, ephemeral world of spring-breeding amphibians. UNDERSTANDING WORLD CULTURES: Antique Eastern Prayer Rugs

Prayer rug design emerged early in the history of Islam.   It is usually a small rug used to kneel on during prayer.  However, the design of these rugs developed into a popular genre of carpet.   Learn about them and the culture that inspired them.   Prayer rugs displayed will be from the museum’s collection, as well as on loan from Peter Pap Oriental Rugs of Dublin, New Hampshire. Keene Art Walk

The museum will take part in Keene Art Walk this year.   Art ‘pennants’, triangular art pieces depicting scenes and people from Keene’s history made by 3rd grade students from Franklin School, will be displayed on the museum’s iron fence for the week of Art Walk. Horatio Colony II's involvement with collecting began as a child.   One of his first interest was seasonal Turn-of -the-Century graphics, which he pasted into a scrap book.  He also saved greeting cards sent to him at his home.  Using copies of these graphics, as well as other Victorian images, this workshop will teach you how to make your own traditional seasonal greeting cards.  * $ 5 fee for materials.  Reservations required.
